Sorry Audi !!!

I have just watched the Audi A8’s US commercial and I can say one thing, it is excellent in terms of commercial but Audi cannot sell more cars then Mercedes S-Class. I do know that Audi’s main aim is to create a distinctive brand image between Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series but it is really hard. What do you offer Audi A8 different than S-Class or 7 Series? The most comfortable one is the Mercedes S-Class and most sportive one is BMW 7-Series. And also the most prestigious one is S-Class in most of the world. In terms of technology, Mercedes is the leader and economy BMW is the leader. So it is really hard!

Audi is trying it best and introduced a great A8 in all time but S-Class rules this segment! This is the real ugly truth! It is like Range Rover vs. whole SUV market.

My own choice ? BMW 7 Series, because it is the best looking!

From rubber to fashion P. By Pirelli

Today I saw something which really surprised me. I didn’t see ten Bugatti Veyrons at the same time. What I saw was more interesting than that! A terrible consequence of extreme brand extension strategy by Pirelli marketing team. This is the same Pirelli which produces tyres and calendar (I still could not understand the point of calendar’s impact on tyres). Let me tell you what I saw today, Pirelli branded shoes! Yes, they are shoes for humans and sold in Selfridges (Department store in UK) with a very “nice” price 210 € or 175 £ or 285 $.

These shoes are the extreme edges of lunatic brand extension tactics. Company thinks, we can expand our brand to everything and make products which never fit with the brand. Pirelli is a rubber company and mainly focused on vehicle tyres. Everyone perceives Pirelli as a heavy industry firm not a fashion firm! As a result of this perception nobody expects to see a Pirelli in department store.

Unfortunately Pirelli thought we should be in fashion business, because we publish a sexy calendar each year. So people may wish to wear a tyre brand :) Or they might think; we have lots of extra rubber let’s turn them into shoes and sell them. Whatever they thought is not working that well. Nobody was looking at Pirelli shoes or I have never seen Pirelli shoes on any fashion magazine. I think main reason for this, people used to see Pirelli on their car but they are not used to see on their feet! And this is the minor point Pirelli may accidently skipped!

I did some research on internet and I found out that it is worse than I thought. Pirelli has women section also! They also have high heels for women! I have never seen a woman who desires to wear a pair of Pirellis.

Mercedes S-Class interior lighting :O

Today I had chance to play with a Mercedes S-Class. I am using the word play, because these new cars offer lots of technological gadgets and you have to play with them to understand their function. Driving a car is not enough, you have to play with its gadget also.

Mercedes S-Class and CL Class offer something really interesting. Interior ambient lighting! With this function you can have a nice and chill-out atmosphere inside your car. (You can see the details in pictures and in video.) I was wondering about this feature for very long time and today I had chance to experience it.

Unfortunately colour choices were not that good! Neutral, solar and polar. Neutral is neutral, it is white coloured light, nothing special. In solar mode, you feel like you are in beach. And in polar mode, you feel like you in a cheap club or in a taxi! It is neon blue, it is worst colour I have ever seen inside a car. The worst case is, Mercedes engineers decided this colour and they officially offer it. Two colour option is enough :)

Excellence of Fiat

Detroit motor show is a milestone for automotive industry. It will be remembered as an important turning point for Maserati. After the announcement from Fiat’s CEO Marchionnne, Maserati is not the old Maserati as we know.

For a quite long time, Maserati SUV rumour was buzzing in automotive world. And many people know that it was going to happen one day, because current Fiat CEO is so ambitious to turn Fiat into Volkswagen, an automotive empire. But he is doing it by ruining the brands! If you say this to him, he would say Porsche has an SUV also. But Porsche is not Maserati. Maserati is one of the most respectful brands in automotive industry and has a longer heritage than the Ferrari, therefore the products should reflect this cultural identity.

An SUV for Maserati and manufacturing it based on Jeep Grand Cherokee chassis is the worst thing you can do to Maserati. I don’t know anything worse than this, a Maserati based on Jeep! In order to produce SUV, Fiat will pour lots of money to this project and also Fiat has to compete with Land Rover, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Audi. I can predict their point, Maserati is a niche brand and it will be a niche SUV! But it won’t be, because the competitors are the masters of SUV and they offer everything which consumers looking for. For that reason, Maserati SUV project will be a very expensive for Fiat. And also a big question mark for long term sales performance!

My opinion; instead of pouring cash into this interesting project, Fiat can focus on shifting the quality of Maserati vehicles and offer more technology. Maserati has an excellent design philosophy and if they offer a similar level of technology to Germans, nobody can keep up with it. Instead of spreading the energy of company into different projects, they should focus on improving the current projects.

Maserati SUV will receive high demand for short term but after the consumers lose their excitement towards the vehicles, everything will be the same!

Small spot in white shirt: Ford Mondeo

Have you ever had a spot in your white shirt or in your white dress? I mean a very small, tiny dot. It might be hard to spot by others but you knew that it is over there. This small spot which may not be recognized by other but it destroys the whole white.

What I have shown here is the same. A small spot in a white cloth! I am sure many of you may not understand this hook and why I am so disappointed with that. This hook is the most primitive thing in automotive industry. Many years ago, when an air hydraulic was not present in real world, automotive firms were using this hook to keep bonnet open. I do know that, nowadays nobody open the engine bonnet and looks what the things are there. However if you open the new Ford Mondeo’s engine bonnet (just for adding water to screen wiper), you have to hold the metal cover with one of your hand and at the same, you have to place the hook into its hole! And all these things mean one thing, your car is cheap! Nothing else. And this ridiculous and prehistoric looking hook is from new Ford Mondeo! The sexy one, the car which was driven by James Bond! This hook is the spot in white.

I cannot understand the logic behind this. Because, in previous Mondeo there were to hydraulics to hold the engine cover and you don’t have to do something stupid things when you open it. And Ford introduced a new model with an older technology. I do know that, this is called “profit maximization” and your engineers calculated or predicted that nobody ever be annoyed by this but I am annoyed. I am very serious, this thing destroys everything with the new Mondeo. Also I do know Ford is willing to shift Mondeo into higher consumer group by offering luxury. However luxury is a composition of small details, it is not just ventilated seats and hand stitched leathers.

Ford Mondeo is the best looking car on its segment, it drives excellent, but this small detail destroys everything. The translation of this detail is; “there might be some other cheap things which we may not see.” I know Ford Europe and Ford USA is reading my blog and I do hope that, you will take this serious.

This is real!

Parking a car and placing it in a very good way is like cooking a thick sirloin beef without burning the meat! To avoid burning the meat, you need to burn many meats and have experience. This experience will develop your sense and you will know how long you should cook each part. This is very similar to parking a car. When you first start parking, you will look for very huge spaces, then you will find medium size spaces and finally you will be parking a space which is only twenty centimetres bigger than your car. But each time, parking is something annoying, look left, look right, look there, look here! Similar to cooking! You must look to everywhere all the time.

For many years, I was wondering will it be possible to see a car parking by itself. It sounded very science fiction for many years. Actually parking sensor was a revolution in automotive business and it was very expensive. Everyone said parking sensors changed everything and they did it. Now it is nearly impossible to park without the sensors unless you have a very well trained sixth sense. I think Volkswagen understood this problem and focused on self-parking technology. They did not wish us to develop our sense :)

Many of you might have heard of automatic parking systems and they sound a bit useless. You need to press this and do that and wait. Lexus has a very useless system as a matter of fact but Volkswagen has something really intelligent. I never thought that a car can park like and it would be entertaining. And this happened with VW Passat. Last week I had a test drive with new Passat and I wanted to try the auto parking function. For the first time it is a bit complicated; you have to signal to right and drive slow and then party starts! Passat recognizes the empty spot and tell you, let’s do it.

Honestly, it is working brilliantly. You don’t need to worry for anything, everything is under the control of German made Passat. You only need to press throttle and press brake that’s all, and change the gear. I think it would be easier as you use it more often. Even though, it was amazing for the first. Again, this systems works excellently, go and buy it :) Unfortunately, there is a no auto cooking for beefs.

Mini Countryman in faux snow

Mini is not my favourite car brand. Despite its excellent drive train and go kart like driving experience, the design and its target group caused me to ignore it! Many times I tried to like the Mini but it never happened. In first generation, the engine was coming from Brazil and produced by Chrysler! This was not something very nice to see in a new car. Many people skipped this problem but it was the reason why Mini was eating petrol like nothing else. In second generation, the engine is replaced with PSA Group (Peugeot Citroën) engines and they are better but nothing has changed in terms of design. In addition, more snobs bought Mini and this was worse than Chrysler engine.

However Mini Clubman changed my view on Mini because I love the Rolls Royce style doors. And Clubman has one and it also has a Ford Transit style doors at the back. Clubman is the only vehicle which combines Ford Transit and Rolls Royce Phantom! The suicide door is a nice but the rest is the same! Hopefully, snobs did not like it that much :)

And lastly, Countryman. This sounds like an American V8 powered pickup! New Countryman with 6,2lt V8 engine with more loading and towing capacity and bigger than your neighbour’s house :) Unfortunately it was a semi SUV with interesting interior. Actually consumers identify Countryman, as a more comfortable Mini. Countryman offers easy access, more doors and bigger boots. Nobody would ever care about its incapable off road capabilities. And many car magazines compared Countryman with Volkswagen Golf and Skoa Yeti. Nothing can be worse than these.

The incapable off road capabilities, or should I say faux off road capability! When I watched the Mini Countryman’s advertisement on YouTube, I remembered the word faux! In advertisement, two people were trying to clean the “faux” snow from the road and the Mini Countryman (thanks to it “real” four wheel drive) destroys the wall of “faux” snow and surprises people. Unfortunately, there is no plastic snow on earth, all we see is foam glass or something like that. I think it is a product of petrol and being used in most for packing industry and for making fakes snows. (It used to be very popular but not anymore). So, what I learned from this advertisement? I still don’t like Mini and I have solid reasons and Mini Countryman offers excellent traction in faux snow :)

Despite the adverse conditions of Countryman, it has the best front look in whole Mini range. I really like the front design of Countryman. It is much much better than any other Mini!

I was the Guest in a Fashion Blog

Yesterday was a milestone for me. Don’t think that I invented a new type of engine or a new technology to use the lovely vegetable salary as a fuel. Actually what I have done is not that exciting but for me it was the first time.

Couple of months ago my blogger friend Sıla asked me to contribute to her fashion blog called Fashion By Siu. Actually I had some articles about fashion and cars but I was looking for something more exciting for a fashion blog. Hopefully VW and Lagerfeld helped me to solve this problem. VW’s new advertisement turns into our mutual blog topic :) So, there is no problem of finding a topic for her blog.

The only thing is to translate my English written article to Turkish. It sounds a bit weird, my mother tongue is Turkish and I am writing in English and translate it to Turkish :) Reality of internet world!

So, I did translate the article and she immediately posted on her blog. Actually the way she used the photos are much better than I do :) I think I am a bit lazy on this thing or my low energy consuming processor is too slow these kinds of party tricks ;) Anyway, it was a good experience for me to write in a well-respected Turkish fashion blog.

Now I am asking my friend Sıla to contribute my blog :)
